Something weird is going on. We have 11 websites all in the same hosting account and all using Jetpack stats, but only one of them keeps disconnecting from stats. When we go in to either wp .com or the stats area in Jetpack in the wp dashboard, we are greeted with ‘Looking for stats? Enable site stats to see….’ The rest of Jetpack appears to keep working and debug shows ‘All ok’.

So we enable stats, it works for a day or 2, then it’s gone again and all the stats that would have been collected between the time it disconnects and the time we reconnect are not collected.

Now the big thing about this website is it is the only one with WPML. We also had a problem with this site and ‘Google Site Kit’ a fairly new plugin by Google themselves which they have admitted has compatibility issues with WPML, but they say they are working on them. We have removed that plugin completely until it is fully compatible with all our sites.

So my question is if Jetpack maybe has some intermittent issues with WPML?

One thing I did try was to completely delete and reinstall Jetpack from this site, but that didn’t help. What did happen though is Jetpack forgot all our settings. I had to manually reactivate the things we are using, like downtime monitor, show extra widgets, and related posts, among a few others.

Thank you for reaching out to us about this perplexing Stats issue, @sean-h!

Just to confirm I’ve understood this correctly:

    • you’re managing 11 sites, with the same host
    • on one specific site, Stats keeps deactivating itself
    • you suspect this might be tied to WPML
    • reinstalling Jetpack didn’t help

I’m not aware of any known conflicts with Jetpack/WPML, other than what we’ve listed here:

Given that this is likely not a host-specific issue, our only suggestion would be to create a staging site/copy of the misbehaving site, and then deactivate plugins/themes until the issue is resolved.

It’s likely this is a conflict with a plugin/theme or code modification on your site, and that’s a bit difficult to troubleshoot on a live site.

I understand this response doesn’t point to any specific reasons for this issue, and I’m sorry about that. Please let us know if you’re not able to create a staging site, or if doing so doesn’t help identify the cause.

Hi @mzakariya, thanks for taking the time to get back to me.

You understand correctly on all counts.

The thing is, this is not really a very perplexing issue, but more of a mild annoyance. Other than this particular ‘issue’, everything else is working perfectly. Also, to be honest, we actually rely more on Google Analytics, primarily because we still can’t set Jetpack stats to ignore a particular IP, as you can with GA. I frequently view my sites for testing from a freshly cleared browser and not logged in to WP, so Jetpack then counts all those views and seriously skews the stats. But that is another issue I’ve already raised.

Setting up a staging site for troubleshooting this issue is not really feasible, for a few reasons. I’m with Siteground, and their staging facility works somewhat differently to others. Also, the staging copy would have to be password protected to avoid duplicate content. With all that said, Jetpack then complains when I put it in a staging site, saying it needs to run in safe mode, so it’s therefore not fully functional. But, even if I tried to troubleshoot this in a staging site, it would take ages to find the problem this way, as it does not happen immediately. And considering I have 22 plugins on this site, by the time I’ve found a possible culprit….well, life is short enough as it is.

As I say, this is only happening on this site, the only one with WPML. I have a few other sites with the exact same plugins, minus WPML, and Jetpack stats is working fine there. So that very strongly suggests it’s a conflict between WPML & Jetpack, but, which plugin is at fault and needs to be adjusted?

Again, this is not actually a pressing issue, so I’m probably not going to take it much further, and hopefully it might fix itself, eventually ??

Hi Sean. Yes, it does seem like a WPML conflict could be the cause here, since it appears to be the only difference between the sites. However, we are not aware of any such conflicts with WPML, and we know that people do use it without any issues.

I suppose deactivating WPML for a while to test it is not an option? My only other suggestion at this stage would be to create a new test site (not a staging copy) and test it with and without WPML activated.

It may also be worth posting on the WPML forums to see if they can offer any insight:
