I’ve been setting up a new WP blogsite at purplehazelavender.com and using only the standard theme – plus eShop to hanlde the various products. ALL was well till today when I said yes to automatically updating WP to the latest version….and now the home page – all pages will not show up. Well, when I login to Admin, I can preview them all..but the site itself will NOT come up. No problem it appears with mySQL or anything else, so I asked RackSpace to investigate.

The screenshot of the issue is here —
    https://www.kkti.com/wfetch_wp-problem.JPG

As you can see, the path appears to be messed up – what’n hell is this file – xmlrpc.php\r\n — anyways?

And why can’t I see the site? Still using the plain-jane theme too…nothing at all different?????

    HELP here folks?

    Jim

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

eShop has been tested on WP 3.1 so that’s unlikely to be your problem but you could have another incompatible plugin or an incompatible theme.

first,I can no longer ‘get’ to the admin login page!

next, yup using 2010 theme…have nothing else installed or running.

plugins? eShop only….everything else IS de-activated….

so…how can I at least “get” to the admin login page…

btw…this is very upsetting as I thought that WP releases would ALWAYS run 2010….after reading here there IS SOMETHING WRONG with this update….

    hell0 support?

Rename your plugin folder to plugins-old to force-disable it if you need to. Also if you delete all theme folders SAVE the twentyten one, it’ll turn on.

Please keep in mind, WP 3.1 was released in Beta at Christmas, and has been tested by volunteers since then. We do our best. There is nothing ‘wrong’ with this update more than there ever is anything wrong with any release. Give the myriad setups out there of WP, it’s a mathematical impossibility to test everything.

So turn off your plugins. Try a MANUAL upgrade to 3.1, see if that helps.

Finally, in your FIRST post you said you COULD get to the admin screen, but not the front end. NOW you seem to imply you can’t get to the backend. Can you please clarify?

thanks so far on this…I am NOT upgrading 6 more clients to the latest version due to this whole issue…

but on the one in this thread….here’s where I am now.

Issues:i can no longer ‘get’ to admin – blank screen.
i can still not get any display for any page at all on the front end either…you get that constant redirect….

So Far:tried to change the active_plugins setting in mySQL via phpMyAdmin. did that. no change whatsoever…

have deleted ALL themes except 2010 – the one that I was using anyways to build the site for this client. no change whatsoever…

have not tried anything else yet….

could you pls explain this changing the plugin folder — ie I take it you mean the one at “wp-content/plugins” — I just FTP in, change the name and then hit refresh in the browser?

    WooHoo – Update!

Somehow, all of a sudden I can now ‘get’ to the backend admin area and yes I can login…

however, I still do NOT get any display of the site itself, ie the front end continues to be a blank screen.

clicking on any of the pages (we have no posts yet still building the site) will get me to the WYSIWYG display and then a Preview Changes once again brings up a blank screen…

    …sigh…

    ideas here lads?

    got it working!

searched here for windows issues and found the plugin, activated it and the constant redirects are done!

MODs – you should at the least warn us windows users that there ‘may’ be issues….and make a sticky here for us (’bout 38% of all servers are w2k3 etc eh!) who use same with this fix….

this was a lesson once again that software programmers do NOT test on all platforms…sigh….and I’m an MCSD so I know it well…

this was a lesson once again that software programmers do NOT test on all platforms.

So why not help by testing the beta versions?

bout 38% of all servers are w2k3 etc

    more like 3.8%

    Thread Starter JVRudnick

    (@jvrudnick)

dont expect that kind of ‘breakage’ when an update is released…

and actual reported stats say w2k3 etc run 1 outta 3….sorry you dont’ like same…but then again apache is for weenies….

    ;-|

    Jim

yea but apache works out of the box – windows makes you jump thru hoops :>)
be interested to see the server stats as I just don’t believe it

Which plugin was it? I’m compiling a list but without your help, I can’t know ??

    Thread Starter JVRudnick

    (@jvrudnick)

@ipstenu — sorry….here’s the plugin that fixes (least for me on w2k8/IIS7) the constant redirect…

Permalink Fix & Disable Canonical Redirects Pack

installed it via the admin backend, activated, rebooted the server and it worked for me…

    @samuel — google is your friend….ie search for server %’s and you’ll see that “we” hold about a 1 in 3 share….

will I see a sticky on this? sure hope so….

    ??

    Jim “the hoop-jumper extrodinaire!!!”

PS for our other clients I will NOT be upgrading at all….well…maybe in months when the next SP comes out….that addresses this issue….

JVRudnick – Thanks, you’re the second person who reported that. Interesting!

And yes, there’s a sticky up now about troubleshooting 3.1 ??
