Jetpack Won't Install

  • After a Jetpack update around a year ago, Jetpack glitched so I deactivated the plugin. I’ve never been able to reactivate it since and just gave up on it. The problem is, I’m missing the custom contact forms and nice galleries, so I desperately want to try and resolve the issue.
    Jetpack isn’t showing in my plugins via FTP and it isn’t showing as an active plugin. I’ve tried adding it manually (it still won’t show in my list of plugins) and automatically, but it just tells me the folder already exists (it definitely doesn’t).
    I’ve disabled all other plugins and reverted back to the default themes, but I can’t get this working. Is there a bad database entry somewhere which states that Jetpack is installed?
    Can anyone help me? I’m now desperate! I really don’t want to reinstall everything from scratch as I’ve put a lot of work into my WordPress website over the years and have made the odd tweak or two.
    Has anyone else experienced this issue? I’ve searched and searched but no one else has reported this.

    I know you may have already tried this, but just for the sake of being 100% sure, could you try to log in to your site via FTP, delete the existing Jetpack plugin folder (in wp-content/plugins), and reinstall the plugin manually as explained here:

    This is the problem- the Jetpack folder just isn’t there. I’ve tried in FileZilla and on my webhost control panel/explorer. I’ve also tried installing the plugin manually but it still won’t show up as an installed plugin. It’s very strange…

    Hmm, can you send along a screenshot of this wp-content/plugins folder from your FTP client? 99% of the time, this problem is due to the Jetpack folder still being there, so I just want to be sure.

    Oops- that didn’t work.
    I’m looking at the folder right now and can assure you that there’s no Jetpack folder. I’ve also had confirmation (again) from my host confirming that no such folder exists.

    Can you give me some details about how you have these two domains working together? Because when I click your link above, I get redirected to this URL:

    Apologies- the direct url is in fact https://www.ninjahedgehog.co.uk. I’m on shared hosting and my provider sometimes struggles with traffic. I’d like to point out that this has never affected my Jetpack or any other plugin previously. The issue being experienced is with Jetpack only.

    If WordPress is saying the directory exists, but it doesn’t, that’s most likely an issue I’d take up with your webhost.

    As a last resort, you might try this: rename the “plugins” directory to “plugins-2”, create a new “plugins” folder, then try installing Jetpack. If it works, go into “plugins-2” and copy the folders in there back over to the new “plugins” folder one at a time (i.e. don’t simply select all and copy them all at once).

    Still no joy- I created a brand new ‘plugins’ folder with absolutely nothing in it and when I go to install Jetpack, WordPress is adamant the it’s already installed.
    Could this be done to a stray database entry which references the plugin? Are there any particular tables I can edit or remove? This is driving me crazy!

    Could you let me know the exact error message you get when trying to install Jetpack?

    Could you also try installing another plugin, and let me know if the problem is the same?

    Other plugins can be installed flawlessly and as expected. When trying to install Jetpack, I see the usual progress wording but it fails as “destination folder already exists”. Is there a database entry I can delete?

    Thanks for the extra details.

    I’m afraid that message isn’t dependant on a database entry, so you won’t be able to fix things by changing a value in your database. WordPress looks for the folder and files in that folder live, as you start the plugin installation process.

    Since the WordPress installer fails, you could install the plugin manually, by following the instructions here:

    Once you’ve done so, you’ll only have to activate the plugin in your dashboard, and you’ll consequently skip that annoying error message.
