Jetpack update broke my blog

Last week, while updating some plug-ins on one of my blogs, the blog disappeared completely, leaving nothing but an fatal error message. It was clear from the error message that the problem was with Jetpack. (I was visiting a friend at the time and can’t remember the exact message.)
I rang my host company, who very quickly got the blog back and advised me to uninstall the plug-in and reinstall it. I’ve uninstalled, but I’m wary of reinstalling and have noticed a few plug-in, such as Jetpack Lite and Slim Jetpack, that include only a few of the Jetpack features.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has installed these instead or from anyone who can advise me if there’s anyway to avoid this problem again. For instance, I did do the update at the same time as a few other plug-ins. Is it best to do them one by one?
