When did Jetpack’s subscriber plugin start automatically adding a popup to sites with Jetpack?

This started happening on my site at some point in the last month or two. I didn’t enable it, and for awhile I didn’t even realize it was happening. I wound up with 60 subscribers to a Jetpack newsletter I didn’t even realize I had. The problem is, my site already has a newsletter!

Also, my site has no popups, and the new popup is totally out of alignment with the site’s style. Silently adding a popup without asking my permission is kinda shocking to me, tbh.

This kind of silent auto-enablement of a new email subscription feature is really uncool IMO.

I finally figured out how to turn it off – but is there a way to prevent similar stealth enablements of new Jetpack features?

    Hi there, @dtweney,

Jetpack doesn’t automatically add a subscriber popup to your site without your permission. This sounds like unusual behavior and there could be a few reasons why this might happen, such as a misconfiguration or a specific feature being activated by mistake.

Could you please post your site URL here so that we can have a look? If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via contact form. If you choose to reach out directly, please include a link to this thread.

In the meantime, to prevent automatic engagement with new features, you can navigate to Jetpack → Settings in your WordPress dashboard and review each category (Security, Performance, Writing, Sharing). Ensure that you manually enable or disable features according to your preferences.

    Thank you!

The same thing happened to me.

Jetpack doesn’t automatically add a subscriber popup to your site without your permission.

It does, actually. It’s the newsletter subscriptions. It was enabled on both my blogs without asking me. I detest pop-ups on websites so I was quite horrified that Jetpack had added it to mine without asking.

It would be great if the Jetpack team could commit to not adding new features without making them opt-in rather than opt-out.

    Hi @ashleyyakeley,

I tested it on one of my sites, and upon installing and activating the newsletter feature, the “Show subscription pop-up when scrolling a post” feature is, by default, toggle off.

I have then deactivated and reactivated Jetpack on another test (no new installation), and the same feature was set as active as prior the deactivation – I suppose that’s because the system recorded the previous saved settings.

Does your case fall into any of the these two scenarios? If not, can you describe it how you ended up with this fetaure being active per default, and what happens if you test that again by deactivating/reactivating Jetpack?

Let me know what you find out, thanks!
