Jetpack Publicize, e.g. social share, often places ellipses on excerpts when they aren’t necessary. This is especially troublesome when the excerpt is a short sentence ending in a period, and then four dots appear which misleads visitors into thinking there’s more to the excerpt.

Is there a filter to control the logic when ellipses are added?

    Thank you

    Hi @cyclissmo

Thanks for contacting us about this. I took a look for you and your Jetpack connection looks great.

Can you point us to a post where this has happened? Ideally on your Facebook page or other social media site so we can see it.

If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form. If you choose to reach out directly, please include a link to this thread.

    Thanks!

Hi @bruceallen the issue affected this page, thought the client manually edited the excerpt so it appears correct now:

    https://www.facebook.com/newsismybusiness

But what originally appeared as an example for the top article, “Medplus Solutions marks 10th anniversary with investment, growth plans“, the excerpt above the photo looked like this (note the period, then the ellipses):

As part of its growth process, the company plans to soon expand services to the US mainland….

So just looking into a way to manually, via filter, control whether ellipses need to be displayed or not.

    Hello @cyclissmo,

Does your client use another plugin to manage the excerpts or the caption to add to the social media sharing? I am thinking of an SEO plugin or a social media-related plugin (such as blog2social).

I am asking as I tried to replicate what you reported with no success: I didn’t get any ellipses on Facebook whether I entered an excerpt in the “Share this post” editor on the right side of the page (just before publishing the post) or not.

Your client can try turning those plugins off and publish/share a new post to see if the issue reoccurs.

If it’s not related ot any plugin and the caption on Facebook still displays ellipses, I wonder if they’re using the Elementor’s theme editor. I recommend temporarily turning it off and publishing a new post to see if that happens again.

We’re happy to investigate this further if the problem persists, let us know how it goes!

@erania-pinnera thank you, that’s actually great advice. Let me give it a look. If I find that is the case, I’ll check back in with what I discovered and the solution.

    Thanks!

    Hi @cyclissmo

I’m marking this as resolved for now.

If you still need help with this, please feel free to mark it as ‘not resolved’ again.

    Thanks

Hi, hoping I could reopen this ticket as I haven’t had any luck resolving the issue.

I cloned the production site to a dev environment, disabled every plugin with exception of Jetpack, and the ellipses continues to be a problem.

I would be happy to share access to the dev site as well as my facebook test page.

    Thanks
