Not sure if this has been brought up or not, but I have come to notice that Jetpack Publicize is not reporting Facebook “likes” correctly. I kept wondering why I was getting so many likes on things I posted only a few minutes ago and I came to realize these were not “likes” at all, these were actually the number of comments on Facebook for my post.

For instance, I just made a post about my car in my WordPress blog and Jetpack Publicize forwarded it to my Facebook timeline like it’s suppose to. Me and my friends were commenting on the post in Facebook and when I looked back at my WordPress blog, it showed “60 likes” on the same post when I JUST posted it not even 5 minutes ago. Sorry I’m not that popular, wish I were but there is no way I can get 60 likes in 5 minutes. Turns out they were not likes, they were how many comments me and my friends were making on the post in Facebook. We had 60 lines of comments but Jetpack Publicize records it as 60 likes. When I go into Facebook, my post actually had 0 likes.

Please fix this. Comments are not supposed to be reported as Likes and it skews the information.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

That’s indeed the way Facebook Likes work: Likes, Comments, and Shares are always included in the total number of Likes displayed with the Like button.

Let’s take one of your posts as an example:

    • Let’s query the Facebook API to check how many Likes, Comments and Shares you got for that post about your car (lucky you! ?? ): https://api.facebook.com/restserver.php?method=links.getStats&urls=https://shaunie.me/its-almost-that-time/
      <share_count>1</share_count>
      <like_count>1</like_count>
      <comment_count>59</comment_count>
      <total_count>61</total_count>
    • Now let’s head over to this page to create a Facebook Like button for this URL. Enter the post URL in “URL to Like” field; the generated button shows 61 Likes:
      https://i.wpne.ws/OK0n
    • This Like button is the one that’s added to your site via Jetpack, and we do not have any option to alter the number display in the Like count.

I agree that this can be a bit confusing. It might be worth contacting the Facebook Developer team and ask them to change the behaviour of the Like button. You can report bugs to the Facebook team here:
