    Hi Jeremy,

I am having a problem with Photon and my site’s upload speed. The other day, I check my site, https://inspiration-point.org, to see how it’s doing on mobile devices and desktop. Google Analytics complained about the need to optimize my images and the jquery thing from JetPack.

I am using a child version of the Masonry Brick theme and I’m using a plugin to create the simple mega menu. Here’s my practice in regards to images.

If I find an image to use, then I’ll copy it over to the blog post. If need be, I will resize the image on WordPress. Sometimes, I will use GIMP to make appropriate cropping and scaling. The files are saved as .jpg.

I’d like to have my images optimize correctly. I’m not sure if this is a big deal or not. I typically use one or two images. Any ideas of what I may be doing wrong?

This is a good approach. I would also recommend resizing images that may be too big in size, before to upload them to your site.

In addition to the optimizations you may work on before to upload your images, Photon does optimize your images as well.

That said, some online tools still follow old rules when running tests with your site, and will return false positives for images that are actually already optimized. You can read more about it here:

Looking at your site, Google Pagespeed Insights doesn’t seem to complain about images served by Photon right now, but it does show that some of your images aren’t served by Photon and could be optimized. It might be worth taking a look at it.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.

    Hi Jeremy,

    Thanks for replying.

The bulk of my problem is the speed that my pages upload on a mobile or desktop. What is a reasonable timeframe? For me, it only takes about 2 seconds and I’m not using a ton of images. What’s reasonable?

Because I’m uncertain, I installed WP Smush to take care of my images. I’ll keep your suggestion of letting GIMP handle the scaling of my images. What size should my images be, when they’re in a blog article? I’d do a Google Search for 300 x 300 images or 200 x 200 images and I’d use these.

Yes, I am probably using an old rule of thumb.

That really depends on the resources loaded on your home page, the amount of posts you display there, your budget and your hosting provider, and many other factors.

You can use Google Pagespeed Insights to figure out what else can be improved on your site, and for your mobile readers.

The dimensions themselves don’t matter much; the file size, however, is more important. Tools like Photon and WP Smush will help you take care of that though, so you should be all set now!
