    Hi everyone,

I think I am having issues with the jetpack monitoring service. I receive quite a frequent amount of emails stating that 1 or more of our sites have gone down. I currently have 3 of our sites linked to jetpack and the monitor service. All 3 sites are on the same server too, however the monitoring service emails me quite often to say that some of the sites have gone down for 3 minutes. But not all of them are at the same time. I have posted the ‘down times’ for the sites from the 23rd and 24th. Please see below

    https://timeassistant.co.uk
    3 min – may 23 – 11.47 am
    3mins – may 24 – 3.51pm
    3 mins – may 24 – 5.21pm

    https://website-hero.co.uk
    3 min – may 24 – 2.48pm

    https://clydeoffices.co.uk
    3mins – may 23 – 11.51 am
    3 mins – may 24 – 2.51pm

Anyway these emails come in every day or two firstly I don’t think the sites have gone down like this as if they were going to go it would be all at the same time as they are on the exact same cpanel server.

Anyone got any info / advice? I would like to keep running the service its just that I feel I am getting false reports at the moment

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

There are a few reasons that could explain why Jetpack considered your sites down while they was in fact accessible when you visited it. The most likely explanation is that your sites were up, but loaded too slowly.

Jetpack tries to access your site every 5 minutes. When Jetpack’s Monitoring agent notices that your site is down (or can’t be loaded in less than 10 seconds), it tries to load your site again twice from that server location. If that fails too, it tries again from 2 other locations on 2 different continents, with timeouts of 20 seconds this time. If these 2 fail, we consider the site as down and send you an email a few minutes later.

I ran a few tests with the first site on your list, and in some cases it appears that it took more than 16 seconds to load:

So you might want to run some tests on your end as well, and see if you can speed things up a bit, maybe by using a caching plugin.

It could also be because your hosting provider blocked our monitoring agent from accessing your sites.

You can read more about it here:

    Hey thanks for the reply,

I will admit the Time Assistant website does load a bit slower because we have a single slide video at the top, it takes a little longer but the other 2 sites actually run fairly fast with decent load times, I do also run W3TC but it has been having issues recently on the time assistant site, for some reason it keeps failing to create some of the Caches, but thats a topic for another thread obviously.

I have noticed though that the hosting server we are on does tend to slow down occasionally in terms of disk and processors, but again I’d have thought if one was going to fail all would at the same time.

All sites might fail at the same time, but Jetpack Monitor only checks each site every 5 minutes. There might consequently be up to 5 minutes between 2 monitor emails for 2 of your sites.

Unfortunately I can’t investigate more, as Jetpack Monitor doesn’t have any issues with your site at the moment.

I can only suggest that next time you get an email, you could run some speed tests immediately to see if speed is an issue. You’d have to be fast though, since everything seemed to be back to normal after 3 minutes in your past emails.

Yeah ok I get your point there, obviously it wont check all 3 sites simultaneously that does make sense. What I may do then is to see if there is another free monitoring tool I can use on some of my development sites to see if I get similar results.

also in the link you gave in your first reply I checked the know issues link and it does mention W3TC but it didnt go into too much details, is there any further notes on this? Because if W3TC and jetpack are conflicting that could also slow the sites and make the monitor think its gone down. I think I may have to switch to WP super cache….

W3 Total Cache is compatible with Jetpack, but some of its minification options sometimes break some of the Jetpack’s Javascript elements, like the Likes. You should be able to check for that by checking for Javascript errors in your browser:
