JetPack activation is causing a problem on a new site Book-Scene.com

It is hosted on A2Hosting.com with PHP 5.3.29

After seeing other similar issues, I added the code to wp-config.php to log errors and this was generated in the wp-content/debug.log:

[09-Jan-2018 18:32:42 UTC] PHP Notice: Undefined index: redirect_uri in /home/keeline/public_html/dev.book-scene.com/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/class.jetpack-client-server.php on line 134

I am rather surprised that a mere PHP Notice would cause an Apache-level Internal Server Error (Error 500).

I would like to resolve this so that we may still use JetPack — something we have used on more than a dozen sites on the same hosting without problems.

    Hey there @keeline,

So, I can see a ‘communication error’ on your Jetpack connection: https://jetpack.com/support/debug/?url=https://book-scene.com/

Normally, a good first place to start with this particular error is simply by reinstalling Jetpack, but in your case, since you’re using a very old version of PHP, my first recommended step is upgrading PHP to at least version 7. That’s also the current recommended version for both WordPress and Jetpack.

Once you do that, I’d next suggest try starting with a fresh install by deactivating and deleting Jetpack via Plugins → Installed Plugins, and then reinstalling and activating via Plugins → Add New. From there, please try to connect to WordPress.com.

Let us know how that goes! By the way, your project looks awesome, and I’m really jealous I’m not in San Diego to see the series. ??

    Best,
    Cena

We had already tried to uninstall and install Jetpack fresh. After communicating with our host, I was able to bring the PHP up to 5.5.13. Taking it to PHP 7 would involve moving to a different server and possibly breaking other sites, especially some custom ones, so I want to do that on a more deliberate approach.

After increasing PHP to 5.5.13, the activation was slow but ultimately successful. We will monitor the situation to be sure it is stable.

Thank you for your suggestions @cena . Thank you for the positive comments on our project. Since they will be web videos, one does not have to be in San Diego to enjoy and benefit from them. We also have another WordPress site (with Jetpack) called https://Stratemeyer.org which is to share information about Edward Stratemeyer and the Stratemeyer Syndicate.
