None of the suggested solutions I found on the forums helped.
    This was the process:
Its a new installation. Several plugins were installed. When activating Jetpack there was a network glitch, so it seemed it never completed its setup. All other plugins installed and activated properly.
Then: when trying to activate Jetpack, it fails. Cannot install it again, as it exists.
    * I deactivated all plugins, Jetpack still fails
    * I removed the Jetpack directory, to install a new instance, it still showed as an available plugin, although there were no files.
    * I then downloaded Jetpack’s zip file, uploaded it via FTP to the site. Now it cannot be installed as it already exists – but it now no longer shows in list of plugins.
I suspect somewhere I need to remove WordPress installation’s awareness of the previous attempt. I don’t know where.
    Please advise.
    Thanks in advance
