JetPack by WordPress Slideshow background CSS

I am having the same problem as seen in this closed thread

I tried both codes in the above in my Custom CSS editor and adding them to the theme CSS with no luck. I might be adding them in the wrong spot though, I’m not a pro.

https://www.theoddgirl.com/2013/10/steampunk-kaylee/I have successfully changed it IN the plugin but I’d rather not do that everytime an update happens. I’d like to make it have a white background and a smaller border/padding area so more picture is seen.
