I am hosted at Dream Host and am using their page caching, which works with WP Super Cache, when works with JetPack. While integrating Jetpack Boost works to improve my mobile pagespeed insights performance score, I cannot use the Critical CSS thing as that drops my mobile psi score into the 30s. So, I just activated the 3 Js/Cs canonicalization and defer options (something like that–it’s the three toggles that are right under the critical css thing). . . without critical css activated, my mobile scores improved to the 30s, BUT that came at the cost of my sliders at the top of my pages as well as all of the videos on my site. I had to just deactivate Jetpack completely to fix it, so now my psi mobile performance is back down in the 50s-60s.

Any ideas how to fix this?

    Thanks,

    jon

    Hi there, @gatehealing

It seems like there could be a conflict between the Jetpack Boost’s defer JavaScript feature and the JavaScript controlling your sliders and videos. You can try to selectively activate the Jetpack Boost features:

    1. Deactivate all three Jetpack Boost JavaScript options.
    2. Clear your page cache (from your hosting and WP Super Cache).
    3. Reactivate each JavaScript option one by one, testing your site after each change to identify which option causes the issue.

If one particular feature is causing the problem, you may leave it deactivated and keep the others enabled. If the issue persists or you’d like us to look into it further, could you please post your site URL here so that we can have a look? If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via contact form. If you choose to reach out directly, please include a link to this thread.

    Thank you!

Jetpack definitely breaks my videos…what fixes it is to deactivate it.

I’m not sure if I gave y’all access to my dashboard or not. If I did, ,are you in the Philippines? I got a notification that somebody there logged in with admin username so I logged them off and changed my pw. Please let me know if that was y’all.

    Thanks, Jon

Site: https://gatehealing.com/ (to see if sliders work), and https://gatehealing.com/counseling-austin-tx/ (to see if the video at the top works). Ran every possible combination of each of Defer non-essential JS (D), Concatenate CS (CS), Concatenate JS (CJ). Both Image CDN and Image Guide ON. Optimize critical css off on all–it drops mobile to the 30’s. I cleared history, cookies and cache before each run. Firefox private browser on MacBook Pro (both completely up to date):

    1. D on, CJ off, CS off: Slider ok, video no. Mobile (m)/Desktop (d) scores: 88/69
    2. D off, CD on, CS off: Slider no, video no. m/d 65/93
    3. ***D off, CJ off, CS on: Slider ok, video ok. m/d 65/93***
    4. D on, CJ off, CS on: Slider ok, video no. m/d 80/98
    5. D off, CJ on, CS on: Slider no, video no. m/d 84/94
    6. D on, CJ on, CS on: Slider no, video no. m/d 85/96
    7. D on, CJ off, CS on: Slider ok, video no. m/d 89/98
    8. ***D off, CJ off, CS off: Slider ok, vido ok. m/d 82/73***

As you can see, only 3 and 8 yielded things working, and on 3, it came at the expense of mobile performance. ON number 8, nothing is on other than image guide/cdn.

Retested number 3 and mobile went up to 76. Still not where it should be (I used to be at 95-100).

    Hi @gatehealing,

Thank you for detailing the testing you’ve conducted with the Jetpack Boost options. It’s clear you’ve put considerable effort into identifying the configurations that best suit your site’s needs while trying to maintain optimal performance scores.

It appears that you’ve found that disabling certain Jetpack Boost features stabilizes the functionality of your sliders and videos without overly compromising your site’s performance scores. Given the varied nature of WordPress themes and plugins, finding the optimal settings can indeed be quite specific to each individual setup.

We want to clarify that we do not access user dashboards without explicit permission, and in fact, we cannot perform any such actions unless access credentials are provided to us directly. Regarding the login notification from the Philippines you mentioned, it was not from our team. We recommend keeping your access credentials secure and changing them regularly.

At Jetpack Boost, we aim to provide tools that can assist in improving performance across a wide array of scenarios. However, due to the diverse nature of WordPress sites, it can be challenging to provide one-size-fits-all solutions. The best approach, as you’ve already been doing, is to experiment with the available options to find a balance that works specifically for your site.

We encourage users to continue this kind of testing, as you’ve done, to determine what configurations provide the best performance outcomes for their particular circumstances. If further detailed assistance is needed, it might be beneficial to consult with a web developer who can offer more personalized solutions based on your site’s unique characteristics.

Thank you for your understanding, and best of luck with your site optimizations.
