Jetpack beaver builder edit css/format lost with updates?

Hi,

I’m using the tesseract theme and a combination of jetpack custom css and beaver builder. My question is do I need to use a child theme as to not lose my formatting and jetpack custom css codes with any updates of the theme/wordpress? I’m not editing the themes style.css file directly so this is why I was wondering whether using custom css and beaver builder counted as editing a theme.
