I have been using Jetpack for years, and within the past few months, on an almost weekly basis, I get this warning in my WordPress Dashboard saying:

    “Safe Mode has been activated
Your site is in Safe Mode because you have 2 Jetpack-powered sites that appear to be duplicates. 2 sites that are telling Jetpack they’re the same site. Learn more about safe mode.”

The two sites it mentions are:

    18.206.224.20 and mikeeckman.com

I click on the second option to treat each site as independent sites
18.206.224.20 settings, stats, and subscribers will start fresh. mikeeckman.com will keep its data as is. The message goes away for a couple days but comes back.

The thing is, 18.206.224.20 is not a duplicate site. That’s the public IP of my server, hosted by Amazon Web Services. I have DNS correctly configured to mikeeckman.com and my site works fine. 18.206.224.20 is not a separate site, but Jetpack keeps thinking it is.

Not only is this annoying, but I am concerned it’s affecting my stats, so how can I fix this?

  • Hi @mikeeckman

I’ve seen you’ve mentioned having the Safe Mode prompt appearing on your site; however, that’s completely normal since your website is available and loading through two different URLs (18.206.224.20 and mikeeckman.com).

Jetpack expects that your website is only loading and working through one static URL, so to avoid getting the Safe Mode prompt each time, I’d suggest hard-coding your website’s URL in the wp-config.php file as explained below:

    Changing The Site URL

You can then resolve the Safe Mode prompt by selecting an option to either migrate the stats/subscribers or start fresh as shown in our guide:
