~ i received a notice and have tried to upgrade from 3.1.1 to 3.2 several times this afternoon and can only get as far as “unpacking…”

… then it just appears to hang… there is no indicator within the window ( that would be helpful ?? to indicate that anything is really happening…

~ but 3.1.1 seems to have been removed from my dashboard… now i’m stuck…

~ 3.1.1 installed just a few days ago, and seemed to work fine, also downloaded and unpacked in a very short time. – db

Could you try to log in to your site via FTP, delete the existing Jetpack plugin folder, and reinstall the plugin manually as explained here:

Let me know how it goes.

Hello, Jeremy; I appreciate your note, thank you.

Regretfully, this is not my area of expertise. I may get to that, but need to focus elsewhere at the moment.

For the time being I deleted the 3.1.1 version of the plugin from my dashboard, and may wait for a more stable version that I can simply reinstall.

Having a “democratized” offer is an interesting concept. While I understand the fact that there is an educational component involved in virtually everything, there are different types of people, with different interests, capabilities, capacities and willingness within the broader set of people that the offer is intended to be attractive to. Designing and implementing to a truly broader audience is the tricky part ( and a lot of work ) to effectively producing happiness.

Thanks again, best !! – db

I received an error when trying to update 3.2 also, not sure if the problem I had was the same as the original poster but I’ll copy and paste the error message here in case it helps….

    Unpacking the update…

@effetti I’m afraid you may experience similar issues with future versions. Such problems will happen on some hosts, when a plugin’s zip file is too large to be properly handled by the automatic updater (often because the host has some limits to the size of files that can be uploaded to your site).

In such cases, the only solution is to install the plugin manually, as I mentioned earlier.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, it might be worth getting in touch with your host: they might be able to do this for you.

    I hope this helps.

@retta719 Such errors will happen if you don’t have much space left on your hosting plan. I’d suggest getting in touch with your host about this.

Hi, Jeremy; I understand what you are saying, thank you.

The site is hosted at Rackspace ~ What I don’t understand is why an “update” would be bigger than the original plugin, which loaded very quickly and without problem. – db

Rackspace is as good a host as any, definitely top tier. If it doesn’t work there then something is wrong and it’s not your choice of hosting provider. I use Rochen, another good host and I’m having the same problem.

Hi, Duane; appreciate the note, thank you.

It seems that WP 4.0 has created a bit of a support storm as well… it generally hasn’t been a good couple of weeks for rocket related projects ?? !?! – db

    Update:

As mentioned five days ago I deactivated the plugin and deleted the 3.1.1 files. Missing the simplicity of “Site Stats”, today I decided to try and install version 3.2 as a “fresh” install as opposed to the upgrade path tried before.

    The 3.2 install worked perfectly.

Hope that helps !?! – db

I’m hoping they fix it. Doing this is a PITA when you have a bunch of sites to do this to. That’s why WP has an update system. Make it work!!!
