jet pack site map – images with 301 error

Thanks for reporting this, and sorry for the trouble.

Can you tell me if you deleted the images after you activated the Jetpack’s sitemaps feature? Our sitemaps update every 12 hours, as you can read also here. This could be related to the issue you mentioned.

It’d be useful for us to take a look at the sitemap generated by Jetpack to better understand what’s going on. Could you post your site URL here, so I can have a look?

Hi Stef, sorry for the late reply. I deleted the images days, weeks, months and years before activating the Jetpack sitemap.

I have noticed that the Jetpack sitemap is reporting archive pages to Google etc. How can I be sure this stops?

Thanks for providing that link! I’ve taken a look into the Image Sitemap for your site; however, I didn’t find any broken link there as they were all taking to the related images.

Is there any specific image or link that you can provide us so we can look into this further?

I deleted permanently from the media library, but it remains in my file manager. It is images like this that are causing the errors on ahrefs. What is the best way for me to give you a copy or image of the report?

I checked your media library entries and the image you sent https://customerexperienceconsultant.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/improve-sales-reduce-costs.png was removed and it is not showing at your media library.

Could you send a screenshot from where you are seeing the image, please?

Let me recap my question. I changed to Jetpack sitemaps very recently and the first time I ran the ahrefs check a bunch of images that I deleted from my media library showed up on the ahrefs report ‘3XX redirect in sitemap’. I asked what might cause this and how I can correct the error. You can see the images urls in this screen shot.

To also confirm, I have observed that deleting images from my media library doesn’t delete the images on the server.

Thanks a lot for recapping; the clue you mentioned changes everything! The fact that deleting images from your Media library doesn’t delete them from the server clarifies that only their database reference is getting deleted.

I suspect there’s a plugin or conflict in the way, preventing the default WordPress image deletion process from working correctly.

I’d suggest reverting to the Twenty Twenty-Two theme and disabling all your plugins while keeping Jetpack active, and trying to delete images from the Media Library while checking whether those are correctly reflected on the server.

If that works correctly, you can activate the plugins one-by-one to find which one is causing this conflict, and making images stay on your server.

Quick update for anyone with the same problem.

The problem was no longer occuring, glad I checked that before changing theme and turning off all my plugins!

But that left me with lots of images in my File Manager causing problems with my sitemap.

To remove them I found a plug in (Media Cleaner). The pro version checks for mismatches between the media library and the file manager and deletes the extra images in the file manager.
