    Hi!
An alert reader of my blog kindly pointed out that he was getting the above error when trying to add a comment. This looks like it may be a blast from the past similar to this one. I did read through the troubleshooting steps, none appeared to apply.

I was able to replicate the problem by trying to comment with no URL. As soon as I disabled the plugin, comments began working again.

I had not updated the plugin yet, so I was running 1.8.8. Maybe your latest updated fixed this?

I hope that’s helpful. Thanks for all the good work you do on this.

    Best, Dave

    Hi Dave,

I’m sorry to hear you are having an issue, and I’ll be happy to help.

You mentioned that you went through the Troubleshooting Guide and that nothing seemed applicable, but I think you might have missed a couple important things there that are about your exact issue, and will help you out.

In Troubleshooting Guide step 9, it does specifically mention the issue you’re having, and says that if this message comes up consistently even after JavaScript and cookies are enabled, then there most likely is an installation problem, site configuration issue, plugin conflict, or JavaScript conflict. I can assure you it’s not an issue with the plugin…every time I’ve seen a user have this issue, it’s been due to one of these.

Also, the first step of the Troubleshooting Guide is to work through the FAQs as well. There is one FAQ that specifically addresses this issue as well and what to do: I think a legitimate user or comment may have been blocked. What’s going on here and what do I do? Please follow the steps described there, including submitting a support request at the WP-SpamShield Support Form so we can look into it for you.

Thanks, Dave. Your feedback is much appreciated. ??

When we receive your support request, we’ll be happy to help you get things fixed and working on your site.

    Scott,
Thanks for answering. Fair enough. That may indeed be true.

I just tested again, and now it seems to work. Why? Only your hairdresser knows for sure, I guess.

    Hi Dave,

    You’re very welcome.

I’d recommend at the very least turning on Blocked Comment Logging Mode with the option “Log All Comments”. This is a temporary diagnostic mode that stays on for 7 days. If the issue turns up again, we’ll have some data to work with when you submit a support request. (Please don’t post log data here on the WordPress forums…send that to us through the support form.)

If you would like, you can proactively submit a support request, and we can still help you see if there are other conflicts or configuration issues that could cause it to happen again. Either way, we’ll help.

    – Scott
