• Hello, I received notice today that when googling “Society for diversity” a lot of the links show up in Japanese. I’m not sure where to go to recieve help for this issue. I’m not totally sure it is even word press related. I found 2 .xml site maps in my hosted files for the site, made last week, that weren’t made by me and no one else should have been making anything. Could these be the reason for this issue? If so is it okay to just delete them? If you don’t think that is it, do you have suggestions on how I could start fixing this?

    The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @moarplugins,
    the extra XML files should be safe to delete. What pages are they pointing to? Keep a backup just in case.
    You can follow the instruction on the page below to check / clear any possible malware.

    After you are convinced your site is OK you can follow the instructions on the Hardening WordPress page

    Here is just the top piece of the malicious look one, the other one looks as normal as I can tell.

    </url>

    There are hundreds if not thousands of these lines

    Just delete the malicious ones. Look for a possible hack and secure your installation by referencing the links I gave in my previous post.

    @alichani @moarplugins I have the absolute same problem with my site. How can I delete the malicious ones?

    Thanks!

    So these two site maps that there are, one seems to be pretty normal looking, maps to plugins I use, the links seem to make sense. But the other one is just hundreds of gibberish urls. The one the looks right is called “home-site-map.xml” and the malicious seeming one is “site_map.xml” would changing the name and deleting the malicious one fix it? Am I going to get issues other than the sitemap?

    bump

    @moarplugins,
    delete the “weird” one,for a start, leave the “normal” one. Do you have a SEO plugin (like Yoast SEO) that autogenerates the sitemap? You should be able to check in the plugin’s settings or documentation what the filename is and delete the others. The sitemap will be autogenerated at some point (exact interval depends on plugin and settings).
    Sitemaps server to inform search engines of new posts/pages/media and suggest an update rate. Nothing bad will happen if you delete them.

    Above all check how the bad sitemap was generated. Follow the instructions to clean, check and harden your WordPress installation.
