• As everyone’s surely heard by now, iTunes 4.9 with podcasting support is out. It has a fairly complete directory, but with very little metadata on each podcast.

Apple has published a document with some RSS 2.0 extensions to fill in that missing metadata. I’m going to begin work on implementing those specifications in the WordPress RSS script ASAP, because I want my podcast to be usable within the iTunes directory sooner rather than later.

My question is: is anyone else working on this, or does anyone have an interest in it? If it’s easy to do, I’ll wrap up the extensions in a plugin. If it’s not, I’ll just hack the PHP and share the changes here. I’ve never written a plugin before, however, and my time is extremely limited, so I may ask for help on the packaging-and-polishing part if anyone’s willing. Thanks.

  • Regarding the item specific tags like Duration, and Explicit etc..

I just “forced” them. So all my durations say 00:15:00 even though that obviously isn’t accurate. Because the only other way that I can see is to maually add them each time.

    Anyone with questions regarding this:

Please email me, I’m happy to help to the extent that I can:

    1) images are not required to be exactly 300×300. That is the maximum allowable and the suggested size. My image appears just fine and it is not 300×300.

    2) If you’re stuffing bogus info into the duration tag, then why put anything in there at all? You appear to be concerned about having to manually do it each time. Simply omit the tag and it stays at zero. I don’t understand what you’re trying to achieve if you’re not puting legitimate values in the tag.

this one should fix all itunes incompatibilities.

i forgot my mail address: ipodfun|at|gmail|dotcom|

I started with the replacement wp-rss2.php file Kevin Devin wrote, expanded it and turned it into a plugin, WP-iPodCatter. You can now specify categories, duration, and explicit tags at a post-specific level.
