• i’ve just been noticed by my ISP of better-wp-security’s “contiuous and extremely invasive backup scheduling”.
they have disabled the plugin by renaming it, so that i could check it.

    despite the settings being:
    Backup Method – Email Only

Backups to Retain – 0 Backups

    Backup Interval – 7 Days
the directory /wp-content/uploads/ithemes-security/backups was full of .zip and .sql backup files.

even now that i’ve reactivated it and reset to “Email Only”, and 1 “Backups to Retain”, i see files appearing every 5 minutes on my FTP client opened on the /backups directory.

i’ve read of some rather convoluted solutions to problems arising with updates, but is there any fix from the developers instead?

in the meanwhile, i’m forced to deactivate the plugin and look for alternatives

You are probably seeing .sql files with a certain size and equally named files but with .zip extension and a file size 0.

This indicates that the zipping of the .sql file fails after creating the backup. This could be due to not enough (RAM) memory available.

So increase the PHP memory_limit or disable zipping of backup files …

Note that the Database Backup feature already increases the memory_limit to 128 MB if it is set to a value < 128 MB.

you’re right, .sql files were around 30Mb, all zip files were 0.
    and zipping was enabled.

i still don’t understand why the plugin keeps saving those files every 5 minutes even if the setting is to only send it via email…

however, i’ve re-enabled the plugin and increased memory_limit to 192M.
will keep an eye on the /backups folder…

I think it’s important to mention this is a SCHEDULED Database Backup issue.

A scheduled database backup kicks off when expired.
Only when a scheduled database backup successfully completes the expiration date is updated. So when it fails the expiration date is not updated.
And it keeps trying … fails … trying … fails … etc

Also in order to be able to send a backup file by email it needs to be created first … however when zipping fails (php script execution halts), cleaning up the .sql and .zip backup files never happens…

yes, precisely. thanks for completing the info.

i wonder: wouldn’t it be easier if “Backups to Retain – 0 Backups” indicates “do not keep any copy” rather than “keep them all”?

    @maxgx

From a usability point of view I agree.
This way it was probably less coding for the developer ??
