i have checked my .htacess file recently and noticed that itheme security plugin put the entirety of every single ip it blocked on the .htaccess file. there are over 9000 lines dedicated to the blocking of certain ips. I have a large website and this is definitely an issue for me, many attempt to access or hack the site

is this normal? if not, how can I resolve it?

  • Hi @hildansju,

Please read this post from ithemes blog. It’s a bit outdated, but still includes valid and relevant info. Pay special attention to the section named:

Reduce Server Timeouts with Limits on Banned IPs in Server Configuration Files

There you’ll learn the default max number of banned IPs written to the .htaccess file is 100.

thank you @nlpro. However, im on the free version of the plugin, what you linked to is for the pro version which i don’t have, I wondering why the .htaccess file is filled to the brim with blocked ip lines.

    Hi @hildansju,

Yup, the article is for/about the Pro plugin but the Ban Users feature is identical in the free and Pro plugin. So the content of the article also applies for the free plugin ??

    Hi @hildansju,

I bumped into another relevant and more recent (updated) iThemes article on the Brute Force Protection and Ban Users features:

iThemes Security Pro Feature Spotlight – Brute Force Protection & Banned Users

Again the content applies for both, free and Pro iTSec plugin.

Hi @hildansju, thank you for reaching out. What version of iTSec are you using? The setting for limiting the number of bans was added on version 7.9.0, and as mentioned by nlpro, the default limit is set to 100. Please ensure to use the latest version of the plugin.

@hildansju I see. Could you check what is the limit set on your Ban Users settings? If it’s set to 100 (default), could you try removing the older banned IPs from your .htaccess file and observe if it gets filled up again?
