    Ever since WooCommerce added the option to restrict coupon codes to certain email addresses, I have been using it without issue. I don’t know how long ago this behavior changed, but now all coupons show “No restrictions” for emails where there used to be several. When I add an email address, it appears to try to update, but the field again becomes blank with “No restrictions.”

    I tried updating to the newest WooCommerce, but after I did I could not log into my site — instead got “Forbidden” error. Backdating to 8.4.0 let me log in again. I have seen this question posted before, but no solution given. Any help would be much appreciated.

    I did the steps outlined and nothing changed. After switching to Woo Commerce 9 the site was again inaccessible, but there were no fatal errors generated in Woo Commerce > Status > Tools. When I clicked the button to update the database, it returned the 403 Forbidden error.

    After switching back to Woo Commerce 8.4.0 things worked fine again, except for the coupon email problem.

    Thanks for getting back to me. You must not have seen that there is a previous page to this thread. File/folder permissions have already been checked and verified as OK. Why would the 403 problem exist with Woo Commerce 9 but not for version 8.4 and earlier? What changed?

    As for email restrictions, other fields within Usage Restriction are saved — only email addresses are cleared on Update. Is there something I can check using MySQL?

    I reverted to WooCommerce 8.4.0 and did the steps you listed, then put WooCommerce 9.0.1 back. When I try to log in I get the Forbidden error 403 again.

    Just to add, meanwhile, WooCommerce version 9.0.2 was released.

    Could you please test if the issue persists, when updating to it, or otherwise?

    WooCommerce 9.0.2 does not solve the problem. I’m back to using 8.4.0.

    As I understand you’ve tried with 9.0.0 and above. From 8.4.0 to it, there have been 20 updates, from minor to major.

    More specifically I see this one in 8.8.0:

    Enhancement – Validate coupons with email restrictions upfront and change user’s feedback when a coupon is not valid for the user. #43872

    With this in mind, can you please try rolling back to the previous version, which is 8.7.1, and see if it works for you? If it works there, we could pinpoint that change as the culprit. Similarly, you could try 8.8.0 and see if it breaks again.

    Kindly let us know please. You can try a plugin like WP Rollback to test this quickly. You can also try this on a staging site.

    I’m sorry, my last reply must not have gone through. I installed Rollback, and it’s been great. I found that the newest version of WooCommerce I can run is 8.4.1. 8.5 will cause the 403 Forbidden errors I described earlier. I have found that it is not a conflict with another plugin or a theme, and all files and folders have permissions as was recommended — I have permission for all.

    What changed between WooCommerce 8.4.1 and 8.5 that might cause the access problem? Is there anything I can check with a browser inspector window or other tool to help narrow it down? I have PHP 8.1.29,

    My web host says all of his clients have trouble with newer versions of WooCommerce, so maybe there is something at the server level affecting all users, something that I cannot change. Is there anything I can ask my web host to check that might break in WooCommerce 8.5?

    Thanks for getting back to us! And thanks for confirming it works up to 8.4.1 and it breaks from 8.5 and above.

    8.5 came with big changes, like the Order Attribution feature. This particular feature also caused a bug for some users on certain hosts that caused a 403 error but this was on 8.5.1. This sounds similar to your case, though, as you also mention this seems to be a hosting issue!

    Can you try updating to 8.5.1 or above, and trying either of those two options, please?

    • Check with your host to see if ModSecurity is enabled. If that is the case, you may ask your host to adjust the firewall rules to allow the cookies set by Woo’s Order Attribution feature. You can find more information about the cookies used by this feature in our documentation.
    • If the above doesn’t work for you, disable the Order Attribution feature to prevent future users from seeing the 403 errors by going to WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced > Features and toggling the Order Attribution feature off.

    My web host did the checks you suggested and the 403 error with newer versions of WooCommerce remained.

    I disabled Order Attribution and that fixed the 403 errors! I’m now running the current version of WooCommerce with no apparent issues.

    Now I hope we can address my original problem, which was that emails entered into coupon restrictions did not get saved. Is there anything I can do about that?

    I understand you’re having trouble saving allowed emails under coupon usage restrictions. I tried replicating this in my test store and was able to save emails without any issues.

    Could you please try clearing your browser cache or any server side related cache and try again? You can also try using a different email to see if the issue persists.

    I cleared my browser cache, Themify menu cache, and WC Software License cache, and the problem remains. It affects any address entered, and all addresses previously entered are now missing. It had worked perfectly for years, but I just noticed recently that all email addresses were gone and could not be saved when entered again.

    I had not added or changed coupons for weeks, maybe months, when I noticed the email problem (I was at version 8.4.0 at the time) so there could have been updates to WordPress, PHP, and others that happened before I noticed the problem. I am now at WooCommerce 9.0.2 and the problem is there when I have no other plugins active and using the generic 2024 theme.

    Is there anything I can check using MySQL or a browser developer inspector panel?

    Since this thread is a bit long, let me confirm the steps already taken:

    • You have reinstalled Woo more than once
    • Tested with both 8.4 and 9.0.2
    • Tested while having a default theme on (2024) and all plugins but Woo deactivated

    Is there anything I can check using MySQL or a browser developer inspector panel?

    From what I gathered there’s no console errors on the coupon page when you try to add the email, correct?

    You mentioned that the emails that were added to old coupons are also missing, right?
    Can you check them on the database and see if the email_restrictions are missing there too?

    You are correct on all items.

    I don’t see email_restrictions in the WP database. The only thing coupon-related appears to be wp_wc_order_coupon_lookup.

    The emails for coupons are stored in wp_postmeta table.

    Could you run this SQL query to confirm whether the emails are stored in the database?
    Please replace the “wp_” prefix with one used in your database and also replace the email “[email protected]” with the one you want to search.

    SELECT * FROM 'wp_postmeta' WHERE 'meta_value' LIKE '%[email protected]%'

    This test will clarify where the problem lies.
    After that, we can proceed with the next steps.
