It wasn’t what I expected.

  • What I saw wasn’t what I got. The XML sitemap wasn’t included in the robots.txt file, even thought this was described as a feature that should work out of the box. In addition to that, upon installing this plugin, it blocked certain directories without asking. Lastly, it inserts a line at the top of the file, promoting the plugin. That should be an optional feature that users are empowered to turn off. All in all, it offers the functionality, but falls short and disappoints in other areas.

    The XML sitemap is included if it is detected. So if one isn’t found, perhaps because of a non-standard name, it won’t be included in the robots.txt file.

    As for the blocking of directories, those are standard for WordPress installations. The idea was that people wouldn’t have to know what to block and not block. It was a choice between not doing anything or trying to help out people not familiar with robots.txt entries.

    Everything that gets put into the virtual robots.txt file is optional. Just edit the entries to remove or add whatever you want.
