I’m not overly fond of the menu this plugin adds but are you sure that it installs BWL plugins without you asking it to?

    Try it!
I did not have it before an upgrade.
I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from and another plugin (Better Delete Revision which I did not have) was installing it without asking:

I uninstalled all the plugins to find out where BWL Plugins was coming from.
On the other hand author shows BWL Plugins in his signature!

I removed Force SSL and simply added a redirect rule in
    htaccess.

I did try it. And you did not read that topic. The plugin installs an admittedly spammy menu. It did not install a plugin.

I’ll take a closer look at that menu but a menu is not the same as installing plugins.

I removed Force SSL and simply added a redirect rule in
    htaccess.

Good job! That’s exactly what I would do too.
