• After installing this plugin my admin page opens with a message which says I need to apply my Wanguard key. That message is underlined in blue, suggesting it is a link to the the Wanguard site where I can obtain a key. Clicking on the link produces a message which says I do not have permission to access this page. I then get logged out of my own site! This unacceptable behavior begins again as soon as I log back in!!! So I finally logged back in, ignored the Wanguard message, went to my plugins page, deactivated then deleted the plugin. I will now try what looks to be a competing solution.

  • Sounds very annoying for sure. You click a link, it should simply take you to the site to get a key obviously, not sure how the author has managed to get that wrong but it is probably something the author can fix quickly.

I myself do not like plugins and themes that require a key to make any use of it at all. I feel this is wrong and I learned my lesson the hard way as a plugin developer.

I’m still trying to get a balance between free edition and paid edition. But I never require a key to begin using the plugin. I find it highly annoying and instantly remove plugins that do this. I can tell you that they simply want you to go to their site and give them traffic, before you even have anything from them.

It is meant to be the other way around. You get a plugin, you get something for taking the time to downloading it i.e. some functionality even if basic then you can consider giving them a little of what they want.

    Hi @tim_olaguna,

Which WordPress version do you use? Seems WangGuard has a issue with WordPress 3.1.x

@webtechglobal WangGuard needs a Api Key, is a security measure. The plugin works by making calls to an external server (WangGuard Server). Without this API key, it be exposed to any attack by removing all its effectiveness.

If for example you use Akismet, you also need an API key. The way it works is very similar.

Go to WangGuard menu on the right and press on configuration. That link will take you to the right place to enter your API Key.
