I’m setting up a WooCommerce store for a client who has a brick-and-mortar space and uses square (hence this forum). I’m having trouble getting the categories set up, and I feel like it’s something I’m just missing so I’m hoping you awesome people can help! ??

The way he had his categories set up was by brand name in Square. The way he wants his categories displayed on his website is by type of product: pipes, cigars, and accessories (it’s an old time smoke shop), which are further refined when a shopper clicks on one, such as cigars > aromatic or cigars > non-aromatic.

How is the best way to do this? Square only supports one category per item, but they support variants. Could that work? For instance, if he wants the cigar category broken down into aromatic and non-aromatic. Do variants translate to WooCommerce? I added a test item and it didn’t seem to sync the variant information.

A friend mentioned that I could organize them in WooCommerce with sku instead? But that didn’t seem to make sense…

Thanks so much for your help!

    Hi there,

As you’ve noted, Square only supports single categories. WooCommerce does support multi-level categories, but only one category will be synced to Square. Unfortunately, the best solution is to make each category explicit. For example, if the desired structure is Cigars > Aromatic, the Aromatic category should be named something like Cigars Aromatic or Aromatic Cigars.

Product variants are possible, but won’t lead to the hierarchical display that is desired. Variants would be single products with multiple options.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks so much for your response. Yes, that makes sense.

Other question for you though: what about using WooSquare Pro? I was told that it helps eliminate the issues with categories for better inventory management through square, though I haven’t researched it thoroughly yet. I guess the end issue is still that Square only supports single categories, which is the main roadblock. Just trying to think through this problem!

    Thanks again for your response!

    Hi @bewildinspired,

    what about using WooSquare Pro?

We’re not familiar with this extension. I would recommend reading up on it or contacting the developer to find out how categories are handled.

I guess the end issue is still that Square only supports single categories, which is the main roadblock.

Yes, this is really the problem. With only a single product allowed in Square, there will be no good way to separate out the categories in WooCommerce.

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.
