• I can get some basic functionality, but there are issues When posting to more than 1 protected categories or a mixture of protected and unprotected ones. If I leave public categories with ‘no setting’ and post to it plus one protected category the post does not get displayed to unauthenticated users. If I add ‘only these’ exception to public categories PP starts behaving really strange. Posts get displayed on an unpredictable basis, even though the posts and categories have identical permission settings. Again it seems to do with whether they are assigned to one or more categories.
Another strange behaviour: a number of categories are given the same ‘Post Reading Exceptions’, but only some exceptions are listed in the ‘Edit Permission Group’ menu.
In conclusion it must be said that the true settings of PP are not reflected in the menus and setting available to the user. One would probably need to analyse the database entries. Functionality seems to depend on the sequence in which settings are made.
I wish I had known all that before installing the plugin.
Another sad conclusion is that WordPress still remains a weak option for a CMS.

This is by design. Press Permit does not implement restricted categories like Role Scoper. Instead, the exceptions work just as labeled:

    • Setting a “Read” – “Not these” – “Categories” exception means the affected user or group cannot read any posts which are in that category

If I add ‘only these’ exception to public categories PP starts behaving really strange. Posts get displayed on an unpredictable basis, even though the posts and categories have identical permission settings

I haven’t confirmed or heard of any unpredictable behavior with “Only these” exceptions. You can find some explanation of the various Adjustment methods at the bottom of the Edit Permissions screen. “Only these” narrows access which the user already has by way of their WP role or supplemental site-wide roles. They can be superseded by an “Also these” assignment; maybe that’s where your config became confusing.

I’ll look into that, but am not aware of an issue there. If you assign an exception to a category and its subcategories, only the top category is included in the stored Exceptions list on the Edit Permissions screen.
