    Hi there,

I have recently installed the “Google for WooCommerce” plugin to create a product feed for Google Shopping. However, I have noticed that the plugin automatically loads the Google Tag Manager https://www.googletagmanager.com,

To my understanding, in the European Union, the Google Tag Manager should only be loaded if the user has given explicit consent through a cookie banner. Could you please advise on how to prevent the Google Tag Manager from loading without user consent?

Is there a consent mode available for this, or is there another recommended approach to ensure compliance with EU regulations?

I would appreciate your guidance on how to properly configure the plugin to comply with EU cookie laws.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Best regards,

    Hello marcrix,

Thank you for contacting Woo support.

You’re correct in noting that, under EU regulations, the Google Tag Manager (GTM) should only be loaded after the user has given explicit consent through a cookie banner.

To ensure compliance with EU cookie laws when using the “Google for WooCommerce” plugin, here’s how you can approach the issue:

Consent Mode & WP Consent API Integration:
Google’s Consent Mode, introduced in March 2024, is designed to comply with privacy laws in the EEA and UK. This mode ensures that no analytics or advertising data is collected unless the user has provided explicit consent. The “Google for WooCommerce” plugin integrates with the WP Consent API, meaning you can pair it with a compatible cookie consent plugin to manage user consent effectively.

    Selecting a Cookie Banner Plugin:
Since the “Google for WooCommerce” plugin doesn’t include a built-in consent management interface, you’ll need to use a third-party cookie consent plugin that supports the WP Consent API. Plugins like CookieYes, Complianz, or GDPR Cookie Consent are popular choices. These plugins can present the necessary consent banner to users and ensure that GTM is only loaded after consent is given.

    Configuring the Plugin:
Once you’ve chosen a cookie banner plugin, configure it to ensure that Google Tag Manager and other tracking scripts are blocked until the user consents. This setup will help you comply with EU regulations while using the “Google for WooCommerce” plugin.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your use of the “Google for WooCommerce” plugin is fully compliant with EU cookie laws.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us again if you have more questions or concerns.

    Best regards.
