When creating a copy of a post with “Duplicate Post” and changing the link to the new post name, the Bit.ly shortlink does not get updated, instead remains always the same.
This issue exists since the latest update of WP Bitly.

    WP Bitly Version 2.4.3
    Duplicate Post Version 3.2.1

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Are you positive this is only since the latest update? My first instinct would be that the Duplicate Post is copying all the post meta verbatim, and as a result WP Bitly is seeing a saved shortlink and not attempting to create a new one.

Regardless, this is definitely an issue we want to get fixed, so keep your eyes open for an update in the very near future.

Yes, can confirm running with 2.3.2 without this issue right now.

Apologies for the delayed response, things are busy at the office.

2.5.0 is released. This won’t directly fix the issue as I’m working out the best way to validate the shortlink automatically without excessive calls to the Bitly API, however it does add a “Regenerate” link to the WP Bitly statistics metabox.

After you copy a post, or whenever necessary for other reasons, you can click Regenerate and it will verify the link against your Bitly account and create a new one if it doesn’t match up with the existing URL.

This will also work if anyone manually alters their permalink and needs a new shortlink generated.

Let me know if everything works for you after updating!

Yes, this “Regenerate” link works for now, thank you so much for this valuable support!

Had the same issue. Thanks for this post!

I just learned the hard way about this issue. Just sent a text message to a few hundred at my church. After a few people on my staff started texting me, I found out everyone was clicking to last year’s event 2017. We duplicated this year’s event from last year using Duplicate Post plugin. I didn’t know this issue, and hackaround fix existed until coming here with this issue.

I put a manual 301 redirect at the website to redirect last years event to this years.

But is there anyway this functionality can be made automatic? Most everything about a duplicated post changes – postID, url/slug, dates, times, etc. Why require additional steps from the user, and not just do it automatically? I can’t think of any reason a duplicated (turned new) post would want/need the same old bit.ly link.
