• Hi there,

I’ve got a bit of a strange issue.

We’re currently going through and auditing our low-quality content and updating it to reflect much better quality when I ran into an issue with the categories.

The categories and tags have essentially gone missing and no permalink structure was adjusted or touched whatsoever.

The categories are completely gone, and when I try and add any – it just hangs. There’s no errors, nothing at all.

I’m unsure how they could’ve suddenly disappeared as we were only simply updating our posts and we didn’t even change the permalink at all, just the content, heading, meta title, meta description to avoid this exact nuisance.

When I try and update this post now, it gives me the error: Updating failed. Could not update post in the database.

This brings me to my second problem. We had an issue with the categories, so we decided we’d just upgrade to WP 5.6 as it’s long overdue at this point. We’ve taken a backup, run the update and it went through, however, it’s currently stuck at this page: https://prntscr.com/x7w3bz

Clicking update say it completes, then clicking “Continue” just brings us back to the same page.

We’ve recently been getting attacked and people have been trying to login to our WP-Admin page, so the URL has been permanently changed (I don’t want to necessarily give out what the URL is) and it’s no longer wp-admin so I assume updating could just cause it to spin around without actually completing properly.

The good news is that the public-facing side of things is still loading and working, but we can’t get back into the backend to make further changes, update any posts or add new categories.

Would really hate to have to revert to a previous backup given it confuses the hell out of Google and delays our SEO progress so if there’s any proactive changes I can make that would be ideal.

Does anyone have any advice? It’s very late, I’m tired and I’ve got a lot on my plate so any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

When did the issues with the categories started? Which plugins do you have installed? I understand that reverting back is not ideal but after reading the issues it looks like you might have to do that.

If you ever ran into those situations, I always suggest to create a local version of the site and try to troubleshoot or update it so that if any problem arises, SEO won’t be affected.
