• I have been trying to figure out which is the best CMS for what I need. So, I thought I’d ask the experts here before I dive 100% in. I am trying to create a website for organ transplant patients to educate and provide resources for patients and families. I’ve already played with WordPress some, but I feel like it isn’t powerful enough for what I need. You tell me, here’s what I need:

-Multisite Network (potentially growing to 200 sites) with users having access to the main site as well as ONE sub-site (the sub-sites will be for individual hospitals that perform transplants in the U.S.).
-The ability to have several site roles (and in some cases two simultaneous roles).
    -Fully customizable and responsive theme.
    -An LMS, similar to LearnDash.
-A social network, much like BuddyPress.
-A system where users can track their health, such as their vital signs, appointments, etc.
    -A blog for news.
-Forums with different user roles than the rest of the site.
-The ability to have paid memberships.
-Small online store for apparel, etc.

Any input or suggestions would be extremely helpful. Thank you in advance.

  • Hi,

As per your requirements I would say WordPress is the best CMS available. You definitely have the option to design your own CMS but that would be too costly and also take very long. But of all the CMS available, WordPress definitely best suits your requirements.

    1. Multisite network – WordPress has multisite network to take care of this need.
    2. Site Role – There are many Role Editor plugins availabe (free as well as premium). They can easily take care of your needs
    3. Customizable and Responsive Theme – There are so many awesome wordpress themes available which are customizable and responsive. You can then hire a freelancer to help you customize it further.
    4. LMS – There are plugins available. Just google it.
    5. Social Network – BuddyPress? Yes!
    6. User Info – This could be a tricky part. You can google for a plugin that can help. Or else you can definitely hire a developer to create a custom plugin for you.
    7. Blog – Definitely. That is what wordpress started with.
    8. Forum – There are plugins. Just google it
    9. Paid Membership – Again lots of plugins available. Try S2 Member plugin.
    10. Online Store – WooCommerce is the best plugin for this

WordPress is definitely the best CMS for your requirements. Just google around for plugins that will take of each of your functionality.
If you have any more questions, then feel free to reply.

    Hi there!

I have a very similar “problem” although my requirements are significantly lower.

There is a hobby at my end – I have a model railroad collection. Sofar my collection is presented in a 13 years old pure HTML page. Now I think, it’s time to do a complete redraw of my page and significantly improve it on the basis of a CMS. But how can this be achieved without a lot of programming jobs to do? My thought was: my collection could be presented in a webshop application without the selling feature (I’m collecting, I’m not selling one single piece). The principle is very similar, it’s a product presentation based on a number of criterias.

My good friend “John the frog” recommended woocommerce as a webshop solution on WordPress. This looks very promising for me. I’m convinced we can cover the requirements almost without problems.

What do you think about our approach?
