What I have in mind is kind of complicated to explain, and I really don’t know how to google for it…so I thought I’d describe it here and see if it’s possible to do this with the Link Library plugin before I put all the energy into trying to figure out how the heck to even do this.

So what I have in mind is similar to the Goodreads widget, where you can display your “currently reading” books…except that I want to use this widget on the sidebar within my membership community and allow my members to share the books they are currently reading with the community. So that would require that they are able to add links and remove links (as they work their way through books, swapping them out) easily.

I already figured out that the link library can be used for books, as I am using it for a book list on my site already. I don’t expect them to do the work of getting book cover images up there, so either I could just use text (boring), or if I could configure the widget to not let the link go live without approval, then I could quickly grab the cover image for them. The community is tiny, so it wouldn’t be hard. At least until it grows. Or I decide this is too much of a pain.

    Unless there’s a better way?

Anyway, is this possible? I know that I can have them submit links…but I’m unsure how the widget works and so far trying to wade through and figure out how to configure it has been a headache. I thought I’d ask first and see if this were even possible before I spend anymore energy on it.

Sorry for the lack of response. I totally lost this one in my mailbox. Is this still something you would like to do?

You can definitely use Link Library to allow users to submit books. You could set their submissions not to be published until you approve them. The widget allows you to select one of the library configurations of the plugin to display items. You can configure the plugin to have multiple library configurations under its Global Options section.

The one aspect that is not really there is the deletion aspect.

Do you mean they are unable to delete their own submissions?

Correct. There is no mechanism to allow users to delete links that they created, at least not today. I do add features on request, but this seems kind of niche for the audience. I could do it as custom work with a reasonable donation. You can drop me a note by email if you’d like to discuss details further (ylefebvre at gmail dot com).

I just had a thought as I circle back around to this…are users able to edit the CATEGORIES on their submissions? If so, they could simply categorize their books “CURRENTLY READING” and then when finished, just change the category to something else like “RECOMMENDED READS” or whatever else I come up with…

So can they edit their categories?

No, it is not possible for users to edit links that they submitted in any way.
