Is there much of a difference for SEO in NOT having /product/ in the URL?

Guys, the golden rule of SEO says that the URL should be as clean as possible and contain only the keywords for that page.
But this goes directly against the WooCommerce standards, which is to put /product/ in product URLs and /product-category/ in category URLs.
There are several SEO plugins that “clean” these URLs and leave them as best practices say they should be.
How advantageous is this? There is an article on Github saying not to touch this and so on… I’d like to hear from you about this.
