Is there any way to import CiviCRM contacts without being members?

Hi ya,
So I was wondering if it’s possible to just use this plugin to import CiviCRM contacts even though they are not a member of any thing in CiviCRM.

We will have contacts that are not members, that we would like to be able to have log into the website using their CiviCRM email.

Would this be a case of somehow creating a default membership type in CiviCRM?
