• I am using the Contact Form 7 suite to collect form data in the Contact form DB

I have always upgraded the plugins when alerted.

Until the end of April the system worked but then the message “Failed to send your message. Please try later or contact the administrator by another method.” started being shown on the web page.

The form data is still being entered into the database but:
    1. form submitters get confused and reenter information. Since one of the forms is to collect donations this is serious.
    2. The form submitter is not automatically sent on to the next stage.

I have tried all the suggestions: deactivate and reinstall Contact Form 7, change “from” address to one from the domain, deactivated all non-Contact 7 form plugins and installed the twenty-ten theme, tried clearing all email data and unchecking “Mail 2” and finally installed WP Mail SMTP.

The latter plugin could not send the test email and indicates that the problem is related to daily limits on the mail server. The daily limit is 500 and my average number of emails is 50 per day so I deduce a possible mail server error.

As a short term solution is it possible to disable the sending of emails by Contact Form 7 whilst the host company, 123-reg.co.uk, sorts out the problem?

    Many thanks for your attention

  • Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all other plugins deactivated?

Yes. The problem still occurs with Twenty Fourteen and only Contact Form 7 activated.

The web page shows the following short codes:
    [dynamichidden hiddendefault “CF7_GET key=’defaultvalue'”]
    [honeypot cbi-771]
    [cfdb-table form=”ST GEORGES DAY PETITION” show=”your-message” limit=”5″ filter=”your-message!=null” class=”petitioncomments”]

The forms were originally designed by someone else and I am not aware if these short codes are significant

    Regards

Neither of those shortcodes has anything to do with the Contact Form 7 plugin. Nor is it possible to disable the sending of emails in CF7. All I can suggest is that you temporarily remove the contact form until your hosts have sorted this out.

    Thanks for the advice.

Do you know if there are any plans to make the sending of emails optional?

The reason I ask is that I have some experience with Inbound Now forms and similar problems with emails can occur. However this does not stop the flow of “Web Form to Donate page/form to web site” as appears to happen with Contact From 7

    Another thought

Is there any way to stop these messages being put on the web page where the visitor has just submitted the data from?

In my case the submitter does not need to know if the emails are working and giving them this information confuses them and will not give a good impression.

I suppose you could try hiding them using CSS display:none;.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I do not know anything about CSS or where I find it. It looks like a project for the future.
