Is there an API?

I would like to pull out a list of events for a given date range, for example, to display in a widget using my own templates. It is the raw data (with all the repeating events expanded for me) that I am looking for.
The underlying product seems to be pretty much a self-contained “island” that does everything within its own GUI, so far as I can see. But maybe I am missing something?
