• We have a business website where we sell products. Currently we have a US based sales website but are looking to expand our market into Canada. So as a result we purchased a Canada domain name for our website. What we are hoping to do is to replicate our US sales website so that the Canada one we just bought the domain for will look exactly like the US website.

But considering the boatloads of time and effort we had to put into making the US sales website I was hoping there was a way to clone the website without having to make it all over again from scratch just for the Canada site. Is there a way to do this? The only thing we will be changing is the pricing from US currency to Canada currency but everything else will remain exactly the same. Help is appreciated thanks. Also don’t know if it matters but we are using hostgator for our hosting.

  • There are plugins such as “Duplicator” which assist with this, it lets you:
    – create a copy of all the files, this is actually trivial even if the result is large with many files.
    – create a copy of the database with the required URL changes to the new URL. This is the trickier part.

However I caution you from duplicating the site, it means that all future updates to the website pages+posts+catalogue have to be done twice. Better would be a modification which catered for displaying prices in different currencies, let people choose their currency and made an initial guess using IP addresses etc as to the country of origin of the request.

If you have cPanel with Installatron included you can clone your website very easily but only inside the same domani. You can create a clone in a different directory and you use this copy to make trials without the risk for your original website.
