• First of all, thank you Boone Gorges for your incredible contributions to buddypress.

I would like to be able to add members to groups immediately, rather than invite and wait for them to accept. Our buddypress site is for a preschool, and the teachers want to begin communicating with parents as soon as the class assignments are made.

I know it’s possible to do from the Admin backend page, but it is **so slow** because you have to type each name into a search box and wait until it comes up with matches. Your invite-anyone interface is so much quicker!

Is there a way to extend your plugin to have the option of adding people directly rather than sending invitations?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi @markbildner – Thanks for the post!

I haven’t considered adding an option like this, but it’s an interesting idea.

That said, I’m wary of reproducing functionality built into BP. It might be more worthwhile to invest time in making the BuddyPress admin backend perform better. Can you give some details about your installation that might help to have a closer look? How many members are on your installation? When you begin typing, about how long do you have to wait for results to return? Do you have any information about your hosting setup (CPU, RAM, etc)?

You make a very good point about the backend. That could easily be improved. I confess I am on a shared server, so I have no right to expect performance. That said, here are some stats:

    We have 216 user names.

If I pull up the entire user list on one page in Users->All Users, it takes 6.5 seconds. I can do a bulk action by clicking all of the names and submitting once. Very efficient!

If I pull up your invite-anyone page, it loads with the entire list of users in 6.1 seconds. Click click click submit I’m done.

If I try to add users via the search box on the Groups->Edit page, it takes 3.5 seconds to come up with choices for that one pattern, which I then can select one, click, and then return to the search box to type in another name. Really cumbersome.

It would be great to have (somewhere, anywhere) an opportunity to view a list of all nonmembers of a group with a bulk action to add them. But hey, I’m sure the Buddypress team has bigger priorities than my little feature request.

I started programming in the 70s. I anticipated many changes in computing in those first decades. But never in a million years did I believe that one day there would be worldwide teams of developers producing software products, code libraries, plugins etc. free for anyone to use or extend. Cheers to you and all who do this good work.
