Is there a plugin that does this well? Image/link gallery
-
What I am looking for is some kind of hybrid between a way to display a list of links with descriptions and an image gallery. It seems that plugins are good at one or the other, but doesn’t do what I need.
We’re using WordPress as a ‘hub’ to connect a lot of legacy and distributed sites. Basically, we don’t WANT people to spend a lot of time on the site, we want people to have a single place to find the information they need and be on their way.
One of the things we want people to be able to find are projects that are happening throughout the company. People run their projects on all kinds of internal collaboration tools and sites, so we want to create a kind of ‘project gallery’ that people can browse through – a single place to get a picture of what’s going on everywhere. There could eventually be hundreds of projects here (it’s a big company…)
Requirements:
- a gallery-like browsing experience (carousel or something similar) of images (these will be project screenshots)
- the images link to the project page (not just the image, like most gallery plugins do)
- a visible title for each image/project, with a longer description visible in some way (hover text?)
- we’re using pages, no posts, in our framework, so this should embed in a page
- easy for an admin to maintain (switch out screenshots, alter links or descriptions, add new projects, etc)
- a way to organize the links and have end users discover content by tags. For now, there are only ~12 projects, but this will grow very quickly and become overwhelming without some overall organization or discovery tools.
- ideally, a way for end users to contribute their own content (“Do you want to add your project to the Project Gallery?” – > Place on frontend of wordpress to upload image, add link and description)
NextGen and the related plugins have been very close to our needs, but the management is difficult – for example, if I want to put in another image I have to recreate it and the related content entirely. Also, I have yet to find a way to display it that lets me show the long description in a nice way. It seems to work well just for screenshots, but relating them with text makes it kind of ugly.
I really can’t decide if this is more of a Gallery or a Links problem. Instead of taking the gallery approach is there a Link management plugin that does this better?
