• Hi – it seems some images will work ok, others not, in getting the featured image to show on a page. i for example removed an image sized 220 × 397 which didn’t showup, but replaced it with one that did, sized 1024 × 1517 .
( i used css to set the size smaller).
is there something i should know about sizes?

Yes, the plugin evaluates your images by size and displays them, or not, accordingly, per the plugin description. The standard WordPress medium image size is 300px wide (you can change this in your Media Settings). The plugin uses the medium size to set the minimum image width to display above the post content. It uses the large size as the minimum size for outputting a backstretch image. Images that are really small will not be added as a featured image. HTH
