Is placing a WordPress site behind HTTPS necessary?

    Hi, my hosting provider has suggested paying for additional “protection” by establishing https certification for the url serving my wordpress blog…is this necessary? It’s just a basic blog…no financial transactions (zero customers…just want to protect the site from vandalism basically).
