• I have experience running a number of MU (Network in the new parlance) sites. All of those sites are only one level deep – so all is beautiful.

I’m getting ready to do a new site that will be more complicated organizationally and will require multiple levels of administration by different groups of people. Here’s a rough sketch of what I need (each org/division being it’s own site, preferably as a part of the multisite network).

    example.org (main site)
    -- Org1
          -- Div1
          -- Div2
              -- Subdiv1
              -- Subdiv2
          -- Div3
    -- Org2
          -- Div1
          -- Div2
              -- Subdiv1
              -- Subdiv2
          -- Div3
    and so on...

I’ve read through a bunch of posts and I fear I know the answer (you can only go one level deep). But since there are so many helpful people out there in the WP community, I thought I’d ask first before I look for another CMS for this project.

  • no, not if you were looking for

    example.org/division/subdivision/.

With subdomains you could do it, but only to sub-subs. (I think)

Thanks Andrea. That’s what I thought, but it’s still good to have confirmation from someone as knowledgeable as you. (I’ve read many of your other contributions to the forum).

Alternatively, you can do something like this with multiple networks.

    main.com
    department.main.com
    department.main.com/section/

But that’s about as nested as you can get.

    Or, you can also do:

    div.org.main.com

Hi – I’m glad to have found this post, as I’ve just been trying to do something similar – ie, xxx.sub.site.com as the child sites.

Unfortunately my hosting provider can’t seem to figure out how to allow for multi-level wildcards – ie *.sub.site.com – the install works beautifully but the DNS won’t resolve to the child sites (the main sub.site.com is fine)

Has anyone else successfully used Multisite in this way that can give me any tips?

I think it works better on a dedicated IP, and if the main network domain is the wildcard host for it.

    that I *know* would work.
