Is JetPack "compatible" to German law?

    Hello all together,

    maybe here is somebody who knows about the German restrictions in “internet law”. I read about so many times that Akismet does not work together with German law. Also, the social things are not allowed due to privacy. And the stats are also not compatible to German law. And so on.

    I used JetPack for – I think – 9 months. A few months ago I removed it due to privacy doubts (see above). But to be honest, I miss it. ?? Is it possible to use JetPack in a way that is supported with the German law? Or should I leave it as it is: Uninstalled and replaced with a bunch of other plugins?

    First of all, you can rest assured: Jetpack is a legal plugin, everywhere. Different countries have different rules about user privacy, and we’re always working to make sure that Jetpack and its users are able to comply with those.

    In some cases, this may mean that you would have to warn your visitors about the data that’s collected about them; in others, it may mean that you would need their approval before to collect data; in some other cases, you may have to put together a list of the data that’s being collected, and the cookies used.

    These are just examples, though. I’m not a lawyer, and I’m not familiar with German Data Collection and Privacy laws. I would strongly recommend that you look into this a bit more, and find out what is required from you, site owner, when running a website in Germany. Indeed, these laws apply for all the services you use on your site, whether you’ve added them via Jetpack or via another plugin. As soon as you start using a plugin relying on a third-party service, or as soon as you start collecting information about your visitors, you may have to warn your visitors about it.

    Until you find out more, it may be best to deactivate Jetpack for the time being.
