• I’ve recently learnt a little more about permalinks, and have wanted to change the annoying, messy default permalink structure for some time.

The thing is, I have been running my blog for months now and have quite a lot of incoming links. Most of them are on twitter, forums and comments pages and are not showing up when I type link:siteurl into Google. I do have one from attentionscan.com which I’m sure I could convince the author to change, but I have no chance of changing all the ones that are on twitter etc.

So basically, my questions is; are there massive advantages of having the post titles in your permalinks? Do broken links count against you badly? And ultimately, is it worth changing my permalink structure at this stage?

  • When you go from default to something else, there’s no problem. The posts remain accessible through the default address. When you change the custom permalink (custom to another custom) you will have a problem, but there are plugins to solve those.

I tried changing briefly (not really considering the consequences) and found that the old links did not work

It also, said I had to edit the htaccess file. Can anyone give me some advice on how to do that? Not got a clue where it even is. I’m hosting with GoDaddy

WP should all do it for you, but there are some requirements:

I’ve never used the default structure, but I can access all my posts with the default url.
