• Right now, I have 214 Categories and I plan on adding more. Where the problem lies, is when I go to Write a Post, not all of the Categories are listed in the “Categories” section. If I go to add another Category from that very same page, they still don’t show up. It seems like there’s a maximum number that can be displayed because I can view them all under Manage>Categories. Help please. Also, while I’m posting here, is there anyway to list all of the Categories on the main page even if there are no Posts in them yet? Thanks.

  • damn what does your site look like.. it must just be one MASSIVE list down the left or right side

nabnuts, are you sure that categories are missing there? If yes, how many are being displayed? Usually, you can scoll thru all the categories when writing a new post.
What’s the WP version you use?

    As for your 2nd question:
    You can use wp_list_cats().

It will look like that as soon as anyone helps me out.

I’m positive some are missing. I didn’t count them or anything, but I’d guess about 1/2 to 1/4 are missing.

No one can help me out on this?

Do some searching here in the forums. There’s a cap on how many are displayed and a few folks have posted here with what core file to edit to remove the cap.

never went for more than 100 ctgr ??

but i’m sure you are doing something wrong …

Did something wrong? Adding a lot of categories shouldn’t be considered doing something wrong. Maybe thinking WP was a decent script which could actually be used to make a real website is what I did wrong.

Great attitude to ask for help…

nabnuts, have you seen Ultimate Tag Warrior? I’ve chosen to simplify my categories to less than 10 (still use them for general sorting, private areas, and for certain plugins) and use tags extensively instead. UTW tags have advantages over categories, like dropdown menus in the admin (you are expected to use LOTS of tags), self-sorting dynamic tag clouds, and related posts links.

You can see it used on my site.

Thanks for the help, but I don’t think it actually will, help that is. What I need, is just for the categories to be displayed. Something that I thought should never even be a problem to begin with.

Do you need me to do those searches for you that I suggested earlier in this thread?

This problem has been solved for other people several times. As mentioned, there’s a core file to modify and you’ll get all 40 billion served. It just takes a forum search.

Ok ok. Here’s a more helpful version of the above that I found after 2 minutes of searching. ??

If I might ask, what in the *heck* are you using 214 different categories for? Tagging? There’s better ways to do tagging.

Any given post should go into no more than two or perhaps three categories, at most. Heck, all of the things human beings can possibly do could be summed up into less than 100 categories. Categories are supposed to be broad, that’s sorta the point, to bring your posts together into very generalized topics.

But tags can be as specific as you wanna be. It sounds like you’re using categories like most people use tags, in which case a tagging plugin would fit your needs better. I use Ultimate Tag Warrior myself, and find it extremely useful for this sort of thing. It can also convert your existing categories into tags, if you’re migrating.

Otto, I was evaluating both UTW and Jerome’s keywords. I liked Jerome’s Keywords more. But after using it some weeks and finding out that I do not need categories at all for my blog, I am using categories as tags. OK, not that many features like UTW has. But it’s a standard WordPress feature, no additional tables/fields needed in MySQL and will work also in future versions of WP (which is not sure when using a plugin).
I only was missing a tag cloud and related posts based on tags, therefore I have written a plugin that provides this by using the categories (https://www.sw-guide.de/projekte/wordpress-projekte/category-tagging-plugin/).
