• Hello, I have a question about the legality of using WordPress. I have a company that sells Flash based website templates that come with a CMS to power the Flash based template. We want to start including a blog with the packages we sell and think WordPress would be a great option.

Now, can we legally include WordPress as part of a package that is sold to people online (Flash website, cms for website and wordpress). We won’t be charging people for WordPress since it’s free, but we may charge for the installation and customization of it.

Can you let us know if you think this is legal and okay or if this is against the rules. Also, is there a way to contact wordpress directly with this question, as the source is probably the best person to ask.

Lots of people do that – and if you read the GPL license that comes with the WP package, you should know it’s OK.

Clicking around on this site is also useful…

OK so I have been reading through the GNU and I am in no way an expert, but it looks like it’s OK to even sell software licensed as such because it’s “Free Software”. Is this correct and is this the case with wordpress or am I miss interpreting something?

Now, you can try “selling” it – although why should I pay for it if I can get it free just clicking on the Download link above?
But even if you find a dumb to buy it – you MUST give it away in the same open source form… that’s the part you can NOT go around! Whatever your package is doing – the WP part has to remain open source code.

Actually, you don’t sell the software, if I understood it correctly. You sell your services, don’t you?

Yes, basically we are not trying to “sell” the wordpress blog, we just want to include it in the package we sell (Flash based website and CMS to power it). The Flash website and CMS are however not “free” in terms of licensing.

Yes, I would also call it more of selling a service bundled up in a package than selling software.

I just wanted to make sure we will not be getting sued if we start handing out wordpress blogs with the packages that people buy from us.

Thanks for your help so far, you have been informative.

You can get sued if you don’t follow the open source requirement for the WP code.
If in some way you “obscure” the WP code in your package and try to make it a proprietary code… that’s not allowed.
