Is domain mapping possible in shared hosting environment?

    Just installed and configured Donncha’s domain mapping plugin. I have a multi-site installation with subdirectories, and I have a personal site as a subdirectory that I’d like to map a domain to (but I’m also the Super Admin of the whole enchilada). I’m using GoDaddy as my registrar, but my site is located in a shared hosting environment with Site 5.

    As the Super Admin, I decided I’d go the CNAME route and put the existing WPMU domain in the field “Server CNAME domain.” I then logged in as the subdirectory user and added my GoDaddy domain as a new domain. When I set it as the primary domain for the blog and check it, it redirects to a site 5 Apache specs page.

    For the record, I did create a new CNAME record in my GoDaddy domain account pointing the www entry to the existing WPMU domain. Hope this makes sense…

    Any advice?

    and is the www entry also the home of the wordpress install?

    You also need to go into the site5 control panel and park the mapped domain on top of the wordpress domain (not the sub)

    Yes, the www entry points to the root domain of the WPMU installation. As for the Site5 parking issue, are you saying I would have to request to park my desired URL–the domain I’d like to map to the root domain of my WPMU instance–in the cpanel? Sorry, I’m a newbie at domain mapping so pardon my ignorance…

    Yes.

    that’s how site5 knows where to send requests for that domain.

    Andrea, you’re spot on! I went back and parked my domain in the Site5 cpanel, re-created a new CNAME record in my registrar’s account for the www entry pointing to the root domain of the original WPMU install, and added my primary domain in the dashboard–all working now. Thanks!

    Yes ! It works on shared hosting. I am using it on hostgator ‘s shared hosting and have not get any problem yet .

    i do also have a problem, my domains are on godaddy and im using a shared ip for hosting…

    i cant make to work the domain mapping.. here is my setup:

    WPMU blogs/site setup is on SUBDOMAIN option, i added wildcard(*) as a subdomain on my main domain.

    installed domain mapping plugin and then add a domain and map it..

    the added domain is on the same shared IP, ive check the ANAME record and it is pointing on my server’s IP.

    i tried to create a free domain on co.cc and setup its ANAME on my servers IP, but it redirects to the apache’s welcome message

    “Great Success !
    Apache is working on your cPanel”

    please help…

    It’s my understanding that GoDaddy requires you to purchase a dedicated IP address if you wish to use wildcard subdomains.

    wildcard domains are setup on my hosting not on godaddy

    Ah, sorry – misread it and thought you were hosted there too.

    The step you’re missing: telling your web account where to send the domain. You need to create a serveralias for the mapped domain to the wordpress install.

    my free domain on co.cc is working now, i just parked it on the the main site, other problem is i cant park the other main, cpanel says

    “xxx.com is owned by another user.”

    So you set it up as an add-on domain already?

    Because if it truly is set up by *another user* that is not you…. well, you can’t map someone else’s domain.

    it is setup on the same server, actually i do have an access on my clients server, and the domain im trying to add is also on her list of domain accounts on the server..

    shall i delete the account for that domain? and then just park that domain on the wpmu domain?
