Question: Is Connections (together with a nice theme) able to satisfy this use case?

Our small town (19.000 citizens) has a local education platform where representatives of all schools, the local sports club, and many more work together to foster education of the youth. Education as a broad term: politics, digitilization, sports, culture. The platform aims to offer services to students, kids, teenagers and young adults to enable them to learn, to do internships, to find a place for a vocational training, to get into contact with local companies.

The students at school will start a new project now in a voluntary working group. They will create a WordPress website for students. They take the ownership. The site shall host a database with a business directory of our most important 300 companies (to begin with) in our town. So it will be a kind of yellow pages + job board for the students.
The companies will be send a paper form (contact data, “Do you offer internships?” If yes in which category, checkmarks in the form, etc.) plus also emails for digital collection of database data. The initial database population will be some effort but this happens obviously only once.

    Functional requirements:

    • Classical database search with keywords, tags, filters (yellow pages / business directory)
    • Must be able to distinguish between internships, vocational trainings, open door days, holiday jobs
    • All in German language, other languages would be good (immigrants, refugees).
    • A feature that allows expiration of the (temporary) offers of the companies. Example: A company offers a holiday job for 6 weeks. This offer shall deactivate itself automatically after a pre-defined expiration date. This date will be provided by the company with this offer. The expiration feature must be able to send notifications/alerts to the company.
    • Optional (later, nice-to-have): have a chatbot (AI, LLM) that allows a more natural search of the data for the students
    • WordPress dashboard/backend completely hidden for the users
    • Backup possibility of the database
    • We don’t want to manage user accounts for all of those companies!

    Non-functional requirements:

    • mobile device optimized (Gen Z…)
    • easy administration of the database in WordPress backend by school members / students
    • common database format, nothing proprietary that is linked to only one commercial WordPress plugin. E.g. CSV import/export
    • no enforced compromises by any plugin to reuse form fields for other purposes etc. –> customisable for our specific case
    • no ads or any other unwanted stuff like payment or booking features –> customisable for our specific case

The town administration would pay for the hosting, the new domain and the WordPress plugin license(s), so we have some budget available for that project. The idea ist to let students work together on this project as a cross-functional team, learn a bit about UX, Design Thinking, Agile, Lean Startup. I will coach them in my free time.

Apologies for the delay in my reply, I’ve been away.

After reviewing your required features, it does not appear Connections would be a good fit, at least without custom coding solutions to meet your specific needs. Sorry!
