I opened my site for the first time after the Jan 10 update and found a WSOD. Via ftp, I disabled one plugin at a time. Disabling Akismet brought the site back. Has anyone else had difficulties with Akismet and 5.0.3? Or should I be looking for interactions between plugins?

  • Hi there @mastollhlwid

Akismet is indeed fully compatible with WP 5.0.3.

Would you happen to know what the error was, from your logs? A WSOD usually means a 500 error.

Please feel free to reach out to us at https://akismet.com/contact/, with details (hosting provider, error if you have it, etc), and we’ll be happy to take a deeper look at what might have happened.

One thing to look into, as I’ve seen that happen on some hosts, from time to time, is if the permissions on the Akismet directory weren’t changed to something that makes WP/PHP unable to load the plugin.

Thank you for your interest, @stephdau.

Your feedback was compelling, so I went through and disabled/reenabled about 50% of my plugins, with and without Akismet enabled. I had a 500 server error whenever Akismet was active, regardless of which other plugins were disabled. I disabled it, updated about 28 pllugins that had released since 5.0 went live, and tried enabling Akismet again; still gave errors. I deleted the Akismet plugin folder, then did a fresh install of the Akismet plugin. The 500 errors have not returned. I’m sure it was a glitch, especially since my staging site did not have this problem.

Thanks for the update! It did sound like you might have had a corrupted install of Akismet – which is common in WordPress updates. Sometimes plugins, themes, and even WordPress itself sees some “hiccups” when updating that may cause issues that deleting and installing a fresh copy fixes.

Glad to hear things are working as expected again. Marking this as resolved.
